At the "Valkyrie"'s press day in New York, Tom Cruise revealed everything about the movie, including the motion picture's relationship with his life in the past. Furthermore, he also talked about the interesting part of the flick for him.
Cruise revealed that he had wanted to kill Nazis and Adolf Hitler since he was young. The 46-year-old star said, "I grew up wanting to kill Nazis and wanting to kill Hitler, and remember thinking as a child, 'Why didn't someone just shoot him?'" He added, "So it's an important story to tell."
Cruise then talked about his opinion about the historical movie. Considering that the story is "important to know", the actor reasoned, "It wasn't everybody-not everybody felt the way [Hitler did] or fell into the Nazi ideology." The Hollywood star admitted that he was interested in "Stauffenburg himself and the amount of desperation and pain for him."
About his interest over the German officer, Cruise explained, "He wanted a moral country that participated in the world, not one of annihilation and Holocausts and world domination." The "Mission: Impossible 3" leading man added, "He was a man who was able to see through all the propaganda and see how utterly insane Hitler was, and ultimately he was the one to say, 'Somebody's got to shoot that bastard.'"
"Valkyrie" and Tom Cruise's role as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg in the film have got bad credits from U.S. critics as well German critics. Christy Lemire from the Associated Press said, "Cruise is both the central figure in Valkyrie and it's weakest link," giving reason, "his hard, flat American accent." Meanwhile, Taggespiegel newspaper from Germany commented about Cruise, "but his image as an actor has been finally ruined by Valkyrie."
