A handful of celebrities have been listed in an investigation into obtaining steroids or human growth hormones, an Albany newspaper claimed on Sunday, January 13, 2008.
The Albany Times Union cited music performers like Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, Wyclef Jean, and Timbaland, plus actor/filmmaker Tyler Perry to be among those who have allegedly ordered performance-enhancing drugs in recent years from doctors and pharmacists targeted in inquiry conducted by Albany County District Attorney David Soares.
The paper further claimed that the drugs got shipped to the stars, sometimes under pseudonyms, at their homes, studios, and hotel as well as through the Clay Fitness Club and Spa in Manhattan and the director of its anti-aging and longevity program, Dr. Michael Diamond, a chiropractor from Long Island.
Meanwhile, prescriptions for Blige and other fellow celebrities were signed by Dr. Gary Brandwein, an osteopath from Florida who currently is awaiting trial in Albany on drug charges. However, none of them was accused of violating the law as the investigation has focused on the doctors illegally prescribing the steroids besides the clinics, pharmacies, and other distributors supplying the drugs.
In response to the report, Blige's spokeswoman Karynne Tencer has released statement saying "Mary J. Blige has never taken any performance-enhancing illegal steroids", adding the songstress had not taken any anti-aging steroids either. Representatives for the others, in the meantime, were not immediately available for comment.
