David Cronenberg-directed film 'Eastern Promises' is made the first movie to be screened at The Times BFI 51st London Film Festival.

Eastern Promises' tells the murderous story of a ruthless gangster who is charged with making sure an innocent midwife does not reveal the secrets she has unwittingly uncovered about a notorious organised Russian crime family.
The London-based movie, which stars
Naomi Watts,
Viggo Mortensen, Vincent Cassel and Armin Mueller-Stahl, will launch the prestigious festival on October 17.
Cronenberg - who gained international acclaim for his movies 'Naked Lunch', '
Crash' and '
A History of Violence' - said: "I'm thrilled to be returning to the scene of the crime. 'Eastern Promises' is the first film I've ever shot entirely away from my home in Canada, and it makes perfect sense that it is set in London, home of so many of my most potent film influences. I can't wait to be there."
'Eastern Promises', written by Steven Knight, who also penned the applauded 'Dirty Pretty Things', will go on general release in the UK on October 26. The full programme for The Times BFI 51st London Film Festival - which runs until November 1 - will be announced in September.
